Key Takeaways from PrevenTalk #2: Investigating the Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats in managing and treating Rare Tumour Risk Syndromes (RTRS)

The second hybrid session of the PREVENTABLE project’s PrevenTalk series, held on October 3rd, 2024, provided valuable insights into the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats (SWOT) of RTRS care pathways. Experts from across the healthcare, research, and policy sectors came together to explore how to enhance patient outcomes and improve healthcare systems for managing RTRS. This roundtable webinar was co-organised by consortium partners, the European Health Management Association (EHMA), CHU De Rouen, Centre Henri Becquerel and Sociedade Portuguesa de Inovação (SPI).

Key takeaways include:

  1. The improvement of financing models for RTRS patients within hospitals and at the state level is necessary in order to create more cost-effective treatments. The focus on marginal costs and analysing care pathways as a whole should be prioritised.
  2. The development of new guidelines and approaches to RTRS is necessary in order to better integrate innovative technologies in care pathways.
  3. Better mental health support is a must for RTRS patients, as receiving such a RTRS diagnosis can be traumatic for some people, and will certainly impact their mental health.
  4. Concentrating expertise and specialised care is both cost-efficient and simplifies the care pathway, although networking between centres is essential.
  5. Precision and personalized medicine offer hope for better future RTRS treatments and therapies.
